Dr. M’s Women and Children First Podcast #101: Sandy Newmark, MD; Elisa Song, MD; Leslie Stone, MD – Autism Etiology?

Today’s conversation takes us upstream—to the source—of one of the most pressing and emotionally charged topics in modern pediatrics: the rise in autism spectrum disorders. Autism rates have continued to climb in 2025, but what if much of what we call “the epidemic” isn’t simply genetics or better diagnosis, but a reflection of deeper biological, environmental, and developmental changes affecting the human organism before birth?

To explore this critical question, I’m joined by three extraordinary clinicians who have dedicated their lives to understanding the roots of children’s health and disease.

Dr. Sandy Newmark, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at UCSF, has spent the past two decades at the intersection of conventional and integrative medicine—focusing specifically on children with autism and ADHD. His approach blends deep compassion with scientific rigor, examining how nutrition, toxins, inflammation, and the microbiome shape the developing brain.

Dr. Elisa Song, Stanford-, NYU-, and UCSF-trained integrative pediatrician and author of Healthy Kids, Happy Kids, is one of the leading global voices in pediatric functional medicine. As founder and Chief Medical Officer of Healthy Kids Happy Kids and Tiny Health, she’s pioneering microbiome-centered strategies to reverse chronic disease in children and reshape how we think about wellness from the inside out.

Dr. Leslie Stone, family physician, obstetrician, and co-founder of GrowBabyHealth.com, brings a lifetime of experience delivering and caring for over 5,000 babies. Her groundbreaking work in the science of Developmental Origins of Health and Disease—the DOHaD model—shows how what happens before and during pregnancy programs a child’s long-term health, resilience, and risk for conditions like autism.

Together, we’ll discuss the emerging evidence that the autism epidemic is not a mystery of genetics alone, but a story written in inflammation, metabolic disruption, environmental exposures, and the developmental stressors of modern life. We’ll explore how integrative and functional medicine are reframing prevention—not just treatment—and what it will take to truly turn the tide for the next generation.

This is a conversation about hope, science, and the possibility of rewriting the future—one mother, one child, and one generation at a time.

Dr. M’s SPA Newsletter Volume 15 Issue 22/23/24 – Acetaminophen and Autism

Review Part III – after the Attia Podcast

After completing the interview with Dr. William Parker and now listening to Peter Attia’s analysis, let us look again at this question. I repeat that the initial question has not changed for me. The first and most fundamental question to ask is this: What is the true value of acetaminophen in health compared with the potential risk if the associated findings are indeed correct?

My response to this question has been altered by the analysis so far.

I love this from Dr. Attia: “Some people might be wondering, why did you just take so long to explain all this to us? Why don’t you just give us the answer? I just want the sound bite, man

Peter’s reply, “If you just want sound bites, you’re never going to learn.”

Honestly, if you just want sound bites, this isn’t the podcast for you. But if you actually want to be able to learn to think for yourself, then that’s what we’re here to do. And that’s the reason we killed ourselves over the past week to put together the most thorough gathering of all the data we could find and the most intense night-weekend analysis possible. “

I agree! I believe that the science and data are key. So here goes – round three!…..

Dr. M’s Women and Children First Podcast #62 – Jeff Bland, Ph.D. – The Disease Delusion and Hope for Change

Podcast #62
Jeff Bland, Ph.D.
This week I have the absolute pleasure to introduce you to Dr. Jeff Bland. He is in a word, incredible.
Dr. Bland is supreme thinker in the field of medicine and biology. He is a teacher, product developer, thought leader, unifier of minds and so much more. He obtained his BS in Biology at the University of California at Irvine and then a PhD from the University of Oregon. Dr. Bland was thinking about medicine from a root cause perspective decades before it became more vogue to believe in Integrative medicine. He is the founder of the Institute for Functional Medicine as well as his new company Big Bold Health, a company on a mission to transform the way people think about one of nature’s greatest innovations — the immune system. With Big Bold Health, he is pushing for the power of cellular immuno-rejuvenation through food to enhance immunity at a human level. The key is the rediscovery of ancient food crops and superfoods that have these properties of health promotion.
We wander the landscape of human health through bramble and brook without a care in the world. It is a most enjoyable conversation to share.
Enjoy,

Dr. M’s Women and Children First Podcast #56 – Robert Roundtree, MD – The Autoimmune Story

Robert Roundtree, MD
This weeks guest is Bob Roundtree.
Robert Rountree, MD, received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill in 1980 before completing a residency in family and community medicine at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He augmented his medicine training with extensive postgraduate studies in nutritional and herbal pharmacology along with certification as a master practitioner of neuro-linguistic programming. Dr. Rountree has provided his unique combination of traditional family medicine, nutrition, herbology, and mind-body therapy in Boulder, CO, since 1983. He has recently opened Boulder Wellcare, a private practice specializing in individual healthcare consulting. He is coauthor of three books on integrative medicine,Immunotics: A Revolutionary Way to Fight Infection, Beat Chronic Illness, and Stay Well (Putnam, 2000); Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child (Avery Publishing, 1994); and A Parent’s Guide to Medical Emergencies (Avery, 1997). He is an amazing teacher about all things disease prevention based through a functional medicine lens.
This week we dive into the world of autoimmunity and human health. Why is it happening? How can we stem the tide of immune auto reactivity? What are some treatment options? And so much more….

Dr. M’s Women and Children First Podcast – The Growing Brain and Autism

The Growing Brain and the Upstream Etiologies of Neurodevelopmental disorders – AUTISM
This weeks guest is me! I re-recorded a lecture that I gave in Florida this month at the Annual International Conference for the Institute for Functional Medicine. My goal in this lecture is to look at the upstream reasons that we are seeing more Autism and neurological diversity in children year upon year. It is a wide ranging look at the current state of the science and my thoughts on a unifying theory. As with Dr. Stone’s interview last week with Grow Baby, this is a follow up discussion that is a critical primer for “mother’s to be” regarding disease avoidance measures that can be taken for the best health of the maternal child dyad.
Enjoy,

Dr. M’s Women and Children First Podcast #47 – Terry Wahls, MD – Multiple Sclerosis and Healing

This weeks guest is Dr. terry Wahls. Who is she?
From her website: Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa where she conducts clinical multiple sclerosis trials . She is also a patient with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, which confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. Dr. Wahls restored her health using a diet and lifestyle program she designed specifically for her brain and now pedals her bike to work each day.
She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional MedicineThe Wahls Protocol: A Radical New Way to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions Using Paleo Principles, and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.
She conducts clinical trials that test the effect of nutrition and lifestyle interventions to treat MS and other progressive health problems. Learn more about Dr. Wahls’ clinical trials here. She also teaches the public and medical community about the healing power of the Paleo diet and therapeutic lifestyle changes that restore health and vitality to our citizens. She hosts a Wahls Protocol Seminar every August where anyone can learn how to implement the Protocol with ease and success. Follow her on Facebook (Terry Wahls MD) and on Twitter at @TerryWahls.
For me, this is a story of revolution. The ability to stop a progressive disease and reverse it through upstream lifestyle trigger removal and the addition of substances known to fix defects in human biology. This is the story that we all need to look at from a prevention of all cause disease perspective. This is the how to not get sick over time starting at the earliest age of life.
Enjoy,
Dr. M
