Dr. M’s SPA Newsletter Volume 11 Issue 27 Covid Update #38

Just when you think that the information on SARS2 Covid19 is slowing to a crawl with new discovery, a favorite researcher publishes a truly remarkable bit of scientific discovery. Dr. Alessio Fasano is featured below in Number 6 and his work is really important. A little science heavy but critical for children. There is a take home summary as well. Don’t miss this information.
Quick hits
1) CDC data on adolescent hospitalizations: COVID-19 adolescent hospitalization rates from COVID-NET peaked at 2.1 per 100,000 in early January 2021, declined to 0.6 in mid-March, and rose to 1.3 in April. Among hospitalized adolescents, nearly one third required intensive care unit admission, and 5% required invasive mechanical ventilation; no associated deaths occurred….. Dr. Magryta’s Newsletter Coronavirus Update #36

We must have discourse regarding experimental vaccinations to be a moral society. For this reason, I will take on this controversial topic.
Are we all ok with an emergency use authorization for the COVID19 vaccine for children under age 16 years old? That is a loaded question. In the British Medical Journal we see a piece written by Drs. Pegden, Prasad and Baral this week. They state: “For adults, the benefits of covid-19 vaccination are enormous, while for children they are relatively minor. Rare side effects from adult covid-19 vaccination are unlikely to lead to future vaccine hesitancy whose public health impact could be comparable to the benefits of the adult covid-19 vaccination program itself. But accelerated mass child vaccination under emergency use authorization—perhaps even spurred by school mandates and “vaccine passports”—presents a different balance of risks and benefits. The possibility that rare adverse events could emerge as the more durable public health legacy of an emergency use authorization for child covid-19 vaccines is much greater.” (Pegden et. al. 2021)…….

5 Ways to Keep Your Family Safe From Covid-19 (Pedcast)

Seems like the natural world is infecting human kind with some nasty pathogens these days. Just think about it, in just the past 20 years we have had to deal with SARS-CoV-1 (likely coming from bats), and MERS (a camel cold virus), H1N1 (from pigs and birds), and Zika jumping from rhesus monkeys to humans via mosquitoes. And this is just a partial list. In a world where pathogens are coming at us faster than a major league fastball, it’s time for us to learn more about epidemics and more importantly, how to defend ourselves.  That’s exactly what we are going to do in today’s pedcast.

Covid-19 For Kids (by Peter and Olivia Attia MD)

Well, this is a first for me. I am actually posting a link to a podcast created by another podcaster, medical expert, Dr. Peter Attia . He created a podcast to answer the questions that your children (and maybe you) have been wondering about regarding Covid-19 like; what is a virus, where did it come from, how does it multiply, how big is a corona virus, who is it making sick, how do this virus move around, why are children not going to school or sports, and of course-what can we do to protect ourselves?  I think the podcast is well done and both you and your children will benefit from a listen.  If you have older children, I would say eight years old or above, I think listening to this with them will be an educational and positive experience.  It will also give you a chance to address any and all of your children’s fears and questions about Covid-19. So, sit back, hit the link button in the show notes, and listen to Peter Attia M.D. from his excellent podcast, The Drive
